Why Are My Windows Foggy? A Guide to Failed Glass Seals in DFW

Have you ever scrubbed your window on a Saturday morning, only to realize that the “dirt” you see is actually on the inside of the glass? This is a common experiences that many residents of North Texas share.

But why is this so common in cities like Dallas, Plano, and Frisco? Most modern homes in the DFW metroplex use insulated glass units, otherwise known as IGUs. These are double-pane windows that are filled with an insulating gas like Argon. These panes are held together by a perimeter seal. While efficient for regulating temperature, the stresses of Texas weather can cause damage over time to these IGUs, letting moisture seep in.

On a 100°F July day in Texas, when the sun beats down on glass, the gas inside heats up and expands, causing the glass to bow outward. Nighttime temperature drops as well as air-conditioning usage cool the gas and cause it to contract. After years of these constant temperature swings, the seal can become brittle, causing tiny cracks to develop.

Fog means a loss of insulation

Fog on the inside of your windows is not just a visual problem. A failed seal means that the window is not doing its job insulating. When you lose this thermal barrier that keeps heat out, your air conditioner has to work much harder, leading to increased utility bills.

Do you need new windows?

Many homeowners think that they have to replace the entire window frame to fix issues with fog. At Alex’s Glass Company, we specialize in glass only replacement. We can simply swap out the failed IGU with a new, high-efficiency unit, while keeping your existing frames. This is faster and more affordable.
