Managing Hail-Damaged Glass in North Texas

For residents of Dallas, hail is a seasonal reality that brings more than just roof damage. While homeowners often check their shingles after a storm, window damage is frequently overlooked until a crack begins to form across a pane. Hail in North Texas can reach high velocities that exceed the breaking point of standard residential glass.

When replacing hail-damaged glass, homeowners have the opportunity to upgrade to materials that are far more resilient than standard panes. Tempered glass is a good option because it is stronger and safer, breaking into smaller cubes instead of jagged pieces when it does shatter. While tempered glass is strong, laminated glass is the gold standard for hail protection. If laminated glass does crack, the inner layer will still hold the pane together, preventing debris from entering your home, and keeping hazardous weather out until a permanent fix can be made.

Hail can also cause damage to insulated glass units, or IGUs. Even if the glass doesn’t break, the hail strikes can create microscopic breaches in the window’s seal. After the argon gas escapes and humidity seeps in, the window can start to look foggy. We recommend replacing these windows if you start to notice fog on the inside.
