How to Clean Your Home’s Windows

Before you start cleaning glass, you must remove any dry debris. If you wipe a wet cloth over a dusty window, you will end up with mud that gets pushed into corners and that causes streaking. First, vacuum and use dusters to ensure the area is free of dust.

Many grocery store products can leave microscopic films on the glass that attract more dust. To create a better cleaning solution, mix two gallons of distilled water with a teaspoon of mild dish soap. Using distilled water is important in order to prevent water spots. Water spots can form from the minerals like calcium that are present in undistilled water.

We recommend using a squeegee with a rubber blade for efficient cleaning. Pull down in a smooth motion when you are cleaning. Make sure to wipe the rubber blade with a lint-free cloth after every single pass. If the squeegee is even slightly damp before you start the next pass, it can leave a line of moisture that will dry into a streak.

Avoid cleaning windows in direct sunlight. The water can evaporate before you can clean it off, leaving soap residue on the glass.

A technique you can use to save time is to clean the interior with vertical strokes and the exterior with horizontal strokes. That way, if a streak appears, you will know which side needs recleaning.

You should generally clean your glass at least two times per year. However, if you live near many trees and wildlife, you may have to clean your glass every few months.

As long as you follow this process, cleaning glass will be quick and simple. Clean windows will keep your rooms bright and well-lit.
